Free PTE Mock Test: How to Read Your AI Scores

A free PTE mock test is one of the quickest ways to find out how close you are to the score you need. But the number at the top of your score report is only part of the story. If you are taking PTE Academic for an Australian visa or university entry, what matters is your score in each skill, how steady those scores are across tests, and which skill is holding you back.

This guide explains how PTE Academic is scored, how to read the AI skill scores from a mock test, and how to use them to decide when to book your real test.

How PTE Academic is scored

Before you read a mock test result, it helps to know what the real score report shows. According to Pearson's score guide, a PTE Academic score report has:

  • An overall score from 10 to 90
  • Four communicative skill scores, also from 10 to 90: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing

Two details catch many students out. First, the overall score is not an average of the four skill scores. It is based on your performance across the whole test. Second, some questions are integrated, which means one answer counts towards two skills at once. For example, a task where you listen and then speak feeds both Listening and Speaking. Pearson says 8 of the 22 question types in the current test are integrated.

The test was also updated for tests taken from 7 August 2025. Pearson added two new question types in the Speaking and Writing part of the test, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. If your mock test does not include these, practise them separately using Pearson's guide to the 2025 updates.

How to read your mock test AI scores

Start with each skill, not the overall score

For Australian visas, Home Affairs sets a minimum score for each of the four skills, and you must reach every one. For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Proficient English needs Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69 and Speaking 76. An overall score of 79 does not help if your Speaking is 70. Read your four skill scores first and compare each one with the level you need. Our guide to PTE scores for Australian visas lists the minimums for Competent, Proficient and Superior English.

Find your gap skill

Work out the difference between each skill score and your target. The skill with the biggest gap is where your practice time should go. Since the August 2025 changes, Speaking and Writing have the highest minimums at Proficient and Superior level, so for many students the gap skill is one of these two.

Use feedback on grammar, fluency and pronunciation as practice notes

Many practice tools also show feedback on things like grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary. This can show you why a skill score is low. For example, a low Speaking score with weak fluency feedback usually means you are pausing, restarting or hesitating. Treat this feedback as a guide to what to practise. The official score report you send to Home Affairs or a university is based on the overall score and the four skill scores.

Check which tasks feed the weak skill

Because of integrated questions, a weak Listening result can pull down your Speaking or Writing too. If Speaking is your gap, look at task types such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image and Retell Lecture. If Writing is your gap, look at Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and Write from Dictation, which also counts towards Writing.

Mock test scores are an estimate, not a result

No practice test can promise the score you will get on test day. Even Pearson says the score on its own official Scored Practice Test is only an indicator of your proficiency and does not guarantee the same score in the real test. Your results can also change with your equipment, your test conditions and how you feel on the day.

Pearson's score guide also says that, while every question type is scored by AI, some tasks such as Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay also get a human expert review of the content before the score is final. A practice tool's automatic score will not always match that exactly, so leave yourself a margin.

A few habits make your mock test results more reliable:

  • Take the mock test in one sitting, with the full timing, in a quiet room.
  • Use a wired headset with a microphone. Pearson warns that on its Scored Practice Tests, a Bluetooth headset or a laptop microphone can return a Speaking score of 10.
  • Do not pause, replay or retry answers. That gives you a score you cannot reproduce in the real test.
  • Look at a trend over two or three mock tests, not a single result.

When to book your real PTE test

A simple rule is to book when your mock scores sit above the minimum in every skill, not just on the line, and stay there across more than one test. If your Speaking is 76 on one mock test and 71 on the next, you are not yet consistently at Proficient level.

It also helps to know your options for an official check. Pearson sells PTE Academic Scored Practice Tests, which use the official scoring engine and give an overall score and four skill scores (US$35.99 each on Pearson's site when we checked on 2 November 2026). Many students practise with free mock tests first, then take a Pearson Scored Practice Test close to their booking.

Keep timing in mind too. Pearson says a PTE Academic score report is valid for two years from your test date, and Home Affairs has its own rules on how recent your test must be for each visa. Always check the requirement for your visa or course before you book.
